My buddy Robin’s Hilux on hydraulics dragging.
Before and after. My previous whip. 2010 Tacoma. A lot of work went into that one. Enough to make my work on the VW look pathetic.
I was going through some pics of my previous ride (Tacoma) and was reminded of the skid plate. It was one of the cooler projects I did on the Tacoma and thought I’d share.
The skid plate was made by a forum member in Houston. He was doing basic TRD designs in them. I requested a Punisher skull cutout. He’s the same guy that cut the emblem for my handmade grill. To make the skid plate standout more, I painted it to match the Barcelona Red metallic paint. Since it was under the truck, I wrapped it in 3M clear vinyl to protect against rock chips. This is the same material they do the clear car bras with. I got a 3/4” thick sheet of plexi-glass and cut out a section to fill the Punisher skull opening. I painted the back of the plexi with white paint. I then used a Dremel to drill slots in the sides (3/4” thick sides) of the plexi. In the slots I mounted weatherproof LED strips from superbrightleds.com. I mounted in the side to light up the plexi and reflect off the white paint on the back. I then drilled the holes and mounted the plexi to the backside of the skid plate using similar hardware to the skid plate mounting bolts. I then wired it up to a switch in the cab so I could easily turn it on and off. It was definitely one of the most unique mods on this truck and was a lot of fun doing.
